Our Lavender

So, what kind of lavender do you grow? What's the difference between French and English lavender? These questions come up all the time. When it comes to lavender, we've learned that there seems to be lots of answers to those questions so we're going to dig in and try to explain, as best as we can, about our lavender varieties.

What do we grow?

Lavender (Lavandula) is a genus of 47 known species of perennial flowering plants in the mints family. On our farm we grow cultivars from two species known as Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula Intermedia. Many cultivars within these two species are better suited to the climate in Ontario which is one reason we grow them.
Lavandula Angustifolia is native to the Mediterranean and is often called True Lavender or English Lavender. English lavenders have a sweet aromatic fragrance and the flowers can be pink, white or purple with shorter stems a few inches long. We grow five varieties of Angustifolia namely, Munstead, Hidcote, Melissa, Folgate and Super Blue.
Lavandula Intermedia is a hybrid between Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula Latifolia (Spike Lavender) and is referred to as Lavandin. We often refer to Lavandins as French lavender. Lavandins have a bright more intense fragrance with long stems and deep purple flowers. We grow two Intermedia cultivars known as Phenomenal and Grosso.

What's the Difference?

French lavender is known for its vibrant purple flowers and strong, bright fragrance. On the other hand, English lavender is prized for its more subtle scent and delicate appearance. While both varieties are beloved for their calming properties and versatility, they each bring something unique to the table.

French Lavender: The Bold and Beautiful

French lavender is like the extroverted cousin at a family gathering - bold, vibrant, and always the centre of attention. With its showy blooms and intense fragrance, French lavender is perfect for adding a pop of colour and scent to your garden or home. Plus, it's a favourite among bees and butterflies, making it a pollinator-friendly choice for your outdoor space.

English Lavender: The Classic Beauty

On the other hand, English lavender is like the elegant lady sipping tea in a quaint English garden - understated, refined, and timeless. Its subtle scent is perfect for creating a calming atmosphere in your home, whether through dried lavender sachets or essential oil diffusers. English lavender is also a staple in traditional herb gardens, adding a touch of classic charm to any landscape.

Which One Should You Choose?

Ultimately, the choice between French and English lavender comes down to personal preference. If you're looking for a bold statement plant that will wow your senses, French lavender is the way to go. But if you prefer a more subtle, classic aroma that evokes images of rolling English countryside, then English lavender is the perfect choice for you. Why not plant a few of each and enjoy the best of both worlds? After all, when it comes to lavender, there's no such thing as having too much of a good thing!
